Nudebathing in Spanien - Editorial
In Spain, to an even greater degree than in Germany, topless bathing is no longer taboo
and is to be found practiced quite frequently by Spanish women.
Complete nudity on beaches is gaining more and more acceptance. This not only goes for beaches –
as the city of Barcelona has actually opened its precincts to naturism by allowing complete
nudity in public within the city limits since 2000.

justfordreamThere is a great number of officially recognised naturist beaches, but there is an even greater number of beaches where, owing to their secluded situation, it is possible to bathe in the nude without an official sanction. Up to recent years, the prevalent language on such beaches has been German or English. Nowadays, Spanish is spoken in equal measure in the seclusion of these naturist’s paradises.
Nonetheless, a nudist beach in the style of those quite normed and regimented ones to be found
in Germany is a seldom thing in Spain. Whoever wishes to bathe in complete nudity must turn to
actual naturist camps. For others who do not insist of complete nudity, however, it is possible
to take advantage of the relaxed and casual atmosphere of ‘mixed’ beaches where a
degree of nudity is accepted. Examples of such ‘mixed’ beaches are Es Trenc in Majorca, Es Cavallet
on Ibiza or the Papagayo beaches on Lanzarote, to name a few of the most famous.
‚Clothing optional’ is the new magic word which is to be encountered most frequently among the beaches permitting ‘mixed’ bathing. While certain sections of a beach specifically open to naturist bathers are frequented by a majority of people bathing in the nude, side by side with people wearing swimsuits etc., other sections of the beach are dominated by clothed bathers among whose ranks a number of nudists are accepted. Incidentally, in the Americas, especially in the Carribbean, and in the English language in general, the term ‘clothing optional’ seems oftimes to be used in lieu of ‘Nude Facilities’. This is probably because the discrete expression ‘clothing optional’ sounds less extreme.
